Asia’s Second Largest Monolith

Unplanned road trips are always fun and one such trip brought me to a huge monolithic hill, Madhugiri Betta or Madhugiri hill. The hill is named after a small town, Madhugiri, located at about a 110 km from Bangalore, Karnataka.

The roads are great until Dabaspete on the national highway 4 where you would need to take a deviation towards koratagere. Although the road between Dabaspete – Koratagere is bad, it makes for a more scenic and a relaxing drive compared to the deviation that you could take from Tumkur.

The hill is widely known as Asia’s second largest monolithic hill and a trekker’s paradise. There are numerous doorways and steep sections of stairs that lead up to the top of the hill. The main attraction on top of the hill is a fort that is currently in ruins. The climb up the hill is an enjoyable experience and a few minutes of climbing opens up breathtakingly beautiful panoramic views of the neighboring hill range.

This is a hyperlapse that I shot while climbing the hill

We were unable to climb till the top of the hill as we arrived at Madhugiri around 4pm in the evening. But, this is one place I’ll definitely be visiting again.
