Shivanasamudra

The Shivanasamudra waterfalls situated at a distance of 135 kms are formed out of the branching of the River Cauvery.

The bifurcation of the river results in two falls, Gaganachukki and Bharachukki. We visited Gaganachukki first and this place offers breath-taking views of the river Cauvery tumbling through the rocks and spilling off the cliff with a thunderous roar and is audible from quite a distance.

Next, we drove to the Bharachukki falls, the result of the eastern branch of the Cauvery River. After descending down a long flight of stairs we reached the base of the waterfall. One cannot help but gape at the majestic sight of the cascading waters, bubbling and roaring while splashing down in an endless rhythm.

A coracle boat ride here gets you closer to the waterfall. Looking up at water fall down upon you from a height of 100 feet feels very refreshing and is something one has to experience. After playing around with the water while dodging slippery rocks for an hour we decided to head back after a quick snack.

However, in the monsoons, the waterfalls are full to the brim and people are not allowed beyond a point. They’re allowed only to see the falls from a safe distance. But, we found a way through a broken fence toward the rapids just before the falls and it was an enjoyable experience, this was my first time near such fast flowing waters!

Caution:
The area behind the fence is an unsafe zone with slippery rocks and fast flowing waters in the monsoon season.
